How to Install the Horseman’s Gravity Latch

The Horseman’s Gravity Latch attaches securely to your pipe gate with no welding required. Before getting started, confirm that the HGL will fit your gate, gather your tools, and choose the installation format that works best for your setup.

Will the HGL Fit Your Pipe Gate?

The Horseman’s Gravity Latch is designed for round pipe gates. Before installing, confirm that:

  • Your gate is level and swings freely
  • There are at least 10 inches of ground clearance beneath the gate
  • The gap between the gate and post is no more than 1 inch
  • There are 21 inches from the end of the gate to the top-rail fastener

A 1 × 5-inch receiving slot must be created in the latch post.

Choose the Right Receiving Slot Setup

The receiving slot mounts to the gate post and catches the latch when the gate closes. Its position depends on where your gate sits in relation to the post and how the gate swings.

Gate Closes Beside Post

If your gate closes alongside the gate post, the receiving slot is installed on the side where the latch naturally meets the post.

Gate Closes Front of Post

If your gate closes against the post, the receiving slot is cut in front of the post and covered with a metal plate.
